BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Simon Monckton (University of Alberta BS 1986, University of Alberta MS 1989, University of British Columbia PhD 1997) investigated natural language manipulator control, industrial machine vision, and distributed control of redundant manipulators during his academic research career. He went on to work in industrial robotics, patenting applications of parallel manipulator design and control until 2003. Since then, he has investigated autonomous unmanned ground vehicles and unmanned air vehicles as a Defence Scientist since 2003 at Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC). He now studies the utility of unmanned air vehicles through focussed technology trials and development as head of the Autonomous Systems Operations Group–Air within DRDC’s Counter Terrorism Technology Centre. In this capacity, he ran a high Arctic exercise of DRDC’s Aphid Experimental Unmanned Helicopter within the CAF Joint Arctic Experiment 2014 in Alert, Nunavut, Canada. In 2014 and 2015, he served on the Canadian Delegation of the UN CCW meetings on Lethal Autonomous Weapons.
